Successful EAA Young Eagles and 80th Anniversary Celebration

Dear Friends,

I thank God and everyone who contributed to our combined event on Saturday, June 6th. The weather was "scratchy" as one member put it all week, including storms coming through the night before.  I didn't sleep well that evening and opened my curtains at 6 AM to see the sun!!!  We flew 65 kids with an abundance of pilots, assistants and our registration staff, and I saw smiles wherever I looked!

Our 80th Anniversary event started at 12:00 Noon, and we had visitors for the next 3 hours right up to our closing time of 3 PM. Neighbors who stopped by received a special welcome bag with gifts in it including a wine glass with our new logo on it, an abbreviated history handout, a pen, and a handkerchief, as well as a small bag of chips for a snack!  There was a lot of interest in our Youth programs, our History and our plans in the past and future.

VERY SPECIAL THANKS to:

  • PC JUNCTION/PIZZA CZAR:  For donating 20 pizzas that fed both our Young Eagles families as well as our 80th Anniversary guests.
  • KICK ASH COFFEE: For donating fresh brewed coffee to get us moving in the morning (along with the donuts Dave Thomas always picks up for us).
  • The VILLAGE OF EPHRAIM and TOWN OF GIBRALTAR:  Ephraim provided their historic fire truck as well as their state-of-the-art Engine, and Gibraltar provided their Fire and Rescue truck and Engine as well.
    • Also LAURA in the Town of Gibraltar office, for printing out a lot of pages and signs for us.
  • MARY HOUCK and her dedicated Good Will Ambassadors (14!) who welcomed guests and showed them around.
  • UNCLE DAN'S BAND, with Dan Marks, Tony Moen and Hakon Heggland for playing wonderful music for our guests.
  • Krista Church, Aiden Neal and Max Maltby, recipients of Friends' support through our Youth Programs, helping out and speaking with kids and parents.
  • Hakon Heggland, for helping kids build their own special gliders - including those too young to fly yet.
  • ALL OF THE PILOTS AND PILOTS' ASSISTANTS - We had 12 or 13 pilots this year - WOW!  There was really no waiting for kids to fly, and the pilots did a fantastic job of flying our pattern safely and with constant communication and coordination.
  • JAN and JIM RODRIAN for all of their work in assembling the welcome baskets in their hangar and for running the registration desk along with ROB FUNK (our EAA Chapter Coordinator).
  • KURT HEGGLAND, for designing our new logos and all of our posters!!!
  • RICH BIERMAN, for printing all of the gift bags.
  • ANDY CASHETTA for putting his bi-wing Stearman (of Yellowbird Air Tours) on display and also working with the STURGEON BAY CIVIL AIR PATROL cadets to keep our taxiways clear of debris.
  • ALL OF THE FRIENDS who helped set up and take down afterwards.

For those interested, we will be selling leftover posters for $5, commemorative hats for $25, plastic wine glasses with our logo ($5 each or $15 for four with a bandana!), color iron-on patches for $10.  If you want a poster matted and ready for framing, let us know and we can order one - $50 donation.

We have also incurred some expenses for additional food, advertising in the Pulse, and gift supplies as well as other expenses and we would welcome any/all donations to defray those costs.

We will be putting up the posters in the Friends building for everyone to view.

Final unrelated note - we need to document 500 operations (either takeoffs or landings) on the grass runway 1/19 this year to qualify for government funding to rebuild/smooth out that runway.  I can send you a log or you can enter those in the Office or Friends building when you are there.

I apologize if I have missed anyone but please know that I am personally and as President of the Friends group VERY GRATEFUL.

Sincerely,

Jeff
